Highland Riding Staff

All Highland Riding School Instructors have CPR/First aid certification.

Sarah Vernlund: The owner of Highland Riding has been a full-time instructor since 1980. Sarah is a USEA Certified Instructor, level II. She has thirty years teaching experience in competitive dressage and eventing, and has a Masters Degree with a minor in Adult and Extension Education. A competitive rider since the mid 1970's, Sarah has competed in eventing at the Advanced level and has earned the USDF Bronze medal. Sarah was selected to train with the USET combined training team in the 1980's. She has trained and shown many novice-advanced eventing horses to national awards. Sarah trains and coaches Beginning Novice through Advanced level eventers, and instructs dressage riders through Second level.

Jen Roudebush has been riding for more than twenty years starting her horse career in the Napa Valley. She has spent time in England for an intense training at Yorkshire Riding School and competed for the Fresno State Equestrian Team. Her first two summers of college were spent training horses and riders in Reno Nevada at Red Rock Hounds, followed by two summers working at River Way Ranch Camp, one of the top children's summer camps in the country teaching horseback riding to kids of all ages. Following her love of horses she pursued horseback riding instruction upon graduation from California State University, Fresno with a degree in Equine Science. Jen loves sharing her passion for horses and riding with all of her students.

Lucy Villegas was born and raised here at Highland Riding. She started riding from a very young age with help from owner Sarah Vernlund. In 1998, at age seven, she joined her local Pony Club, where she rated through the C-3 Level. In 2006, Lucy and Talis were Training Level Champion at the Northern California Junior Dressage Championships. Then in 2007, they were successful again receiving Third at First Level at Championships. The following year they competed at Second Level. June 2009 she graduated from Monte Vista High School, and now attends Las Positas College. Currently at Highland she shares her passion with her students, as well as runs the Horse Project for the Tassajara Valley 4H.
